Fillings
When your tooth shows signs of decay, your Terrace Dental Care dentist can help to stop it before any further damage is caused. Fillings are applied to small and developing cavities to restore your tooth back to health.
If part of your tooth is damaged, worn, or affected by decay, your dentist may recommend an inlay or onlay to restore its strength and appearance. These treatments are often used when a standard filling isn’t strong enough, but a crown isn’t needed.
Inlays and onlays are designed to repair your tooth while preserving as much of your natural tooth as possible, helping to protect it from further damage.
Inlays and onlays are often recommended for larger cavities or areas of damage where a filling wouldn’t provide enough strength.
Inlays fit neatly inside the tooth (similar to a filling). Onlays cover a larger area and may extend over the biting surface to rebuild damaged or fractured parts of the tooth, and are most commonly used on back teeth, which experience the greatest chewing pressure.
In some cases, you may also choose to replace old silver fillings with a more natural-looking inlay or onlay. Your dentist can remove the existing filling, clean the tooth, and restore it with a tooth-coloured alternative.
Inlays and onlays are usually made from porcelain or composite resin. These materials are strong, long-lasting, and colour-matched to blend naturally with your teeth.
Gold inlays and onlays may also be suitable in some cases, although they are more noticeable.
Treatment usually takes two appointments.
